We're nonprofit also. We're using PMDF on OpenVMS/Alpha with PreciseMail
Anti-Spam (PMAS), SOPHOS for the anti-virus, and vFastScan to load all
the virus defs into memory so the scanning is very efficient. But then,
we started with PMDF as our POP3 server many years ago before we even
moved to Exchange, so this may not be a good solution for you.

I absolutely love this combination. We get updates to the PMAS anti-spam
files nearly every day - sometimes 2 or 3 times in one day. And the
software automatically downloads and installs the updates. SOPHOS works
the same way for us. I have a command procedure that automatically
installs SOPHOS updates as soon as they are announced. This, too,
happens several times a day - sometimes we get as many as 6 or 7 virus
update files in one day.

I have PMDF configured to check all incoming mail against the spamhaus
list. We reject about 50% of incoming email based on this rather
conservative list. We have yet to have a single legitimate email message
blocked in the many years we've been using this function.

Finally, I have folks using the Outlook junk email filter. Not great,
but it helps some. The end users can also maintain their own
whitelist/blacklist files for PMAS.

And management, of course, wants me to investigate other solutions for
our email gateway. I say if it ain't broke....heck, not only isn't it
broke, it works extremely well!
