I'm not disputing that there may be performance and quality variations.
What I'm asking Mr. Boyd about are the detail of the substantial
architectural differences in how they manage data he says exist.

Subject: RE: SAN and Exchange

Well I am not aware of the details of why SANs perform differently, but EMC
and IBM explained it this way. We have an IBM shark, which we use primarily
for our Mainframe and AS/400 systems, while we use EMC Clariion's for our
intel distributed systems and unix servers.

The EMC is a lower costing product than the IBM shark, but actually performs
better from a raw I/O throughput frame of reference.

The IBM shark is really designed for stability, and we truly never have any
issues with it at all, 100% uptime. The EMC has had it's issues and
microcode upgrades have forced downtime for us, but the system performs so
insanely fast. The clarriion tends to use the latest software to get the
most performance out of the technology, while the IBM SAN sticks with what
is rock solid and performs.

Another note, we are one of the few insane companies that run true diskless
server, Booting to SAN for all. We are running about 225 boot to san servers
now. Hope some of my practical knowledge helps a little, wish I could give
you more detail though.

Well guess I better pay attention, I am in a VoIP class this week.

TTYL,

Okay, I'll ask again. How so? You list some generalities, but I still
don't understand how the two products are different. I'm not a SAN expert
by any stretch of the imagination, but I really wasn't aware that there are
such fundamental differences, so I'd like to understand exactly what they
are.

As I understand it one major difference between EMC and EVA is how they
handle disk groups and how the physical disk spindles are written too and
distributed within those disk groups. The EVA allows you to create massive
disk groups comprising of as many disks as your array will handle, and the
larger the better in terms of Disk IO. I also understand many of the SAN
solutions handle RAID and VRAID differently and performance can be increased
vs. decreased by the amount of disks, depending on what SAN solution you go
with.

I would add that not all SANs are the same. The way EMC writes data
compared to EVA is significantly different and you should understand how
your SAN works first and foremost.

All,

Are there any special modifications you need to do to add your Exch2K3 to a
SAN? Please let me know.

Thank you,
