Does the 5.5 mailbox have an ADC-Global-Names attribute? I'm suspicious that what you have is a mailbox that ADC is trying to match up with a user in Active Directory that already has its own msExchADCGlobalNames attribute (I think that's the name--I'm doing this from memory).
If the 5.5 mailbox doesn't have an ADC-Global-Names attribute, then try adding NTDSNoMatch to custom attribute 10 and see if a disabled user account gets created for it. Then you can use the reconnection mechanism to associate the mailbox with the correct user account.
