I did try that, but it didn't work. It found the deleted account and
asked me to restore it, to which I responded with Yes. But the restored
account never shows up in AD.

You said the mailbox object still existed. He is saying associate that
with an account, for example the newly recreated account that was
deleted. Recreated that account with out a mail box and associate the
old mailbox you said was still there with the new account.

If the mailbox is now gone, recreate the account and a new mailbox and
restore from backup exec.

Or, redirect the backup exec restore to your mailbox to a new folder,
and PST it out and import it into the right mailbox.
