other things that can make emails 'disappear':
- rules, inadvertently turned on, especially in junk mail
- AV could be eating them
- emails can sometimes end up in the Outlook Today folder, where
they're invisible. IIRC, the way to get them back is to temporarily turn off
the Home Page attribute of OT.
