That is the best solution, and there is no downside that I am aware of.

When you filter recipients what happens is Exchange reports an error to
the sending server during the SMTP phase. So the sending server knows
right away it is a bad address. So in the case of a spammer, they don't
care. In the case of a real email with a typo in the address the sending
server is then responsible for reporting to the sender the error. Any
real server taking care of email for real users will do that.

Best of both worlds, perfect solution.
