That is the best solution, and there is no downside that I am aware of. When you filter recipients what happens is Exchange reports an error to the sending server during the SMTP phase. So the sending server knows right away it is a bad address. So in the case of a spammer, they don't care. In the case of a real email with a typo in the address the sending server is then responsible for reporting to the sender the error. Any real server taking care of email for real users will do that.
