Have you got a date set for age of emails? We set this on some so that
the emails are removed after a month

No anti-virus running on the mail server and no user has access to all
the areas where content has disappeared to have manually deleted it. The
most confusing thing is the 4-5 weeks where the backups were missing
that data but it was still available in the live store.

Antivirus?...when I had set up my lab for exchange I configured the

Subject: Public Folder messages vanished

We've had something very strange happen to most of our public folders on
out Exch2003 SP2 server.

We've been dealing with Microsoft on this for the last several days but
so far they're just shrugging their shoulders and going 'I dunno'. I'm
hoping someone here might know more.

On Monday 23rd Oct several groups of users reported that the public
folders they use were empty (last used on the Friday and all OK then).
We have deleted item retention but that shows nothing to recover even
using pfdavadmin. Restoring full backups that are made weekly on
Saturdays successfully recovers the public folder store but it is in
exactly the same condition as the live one - most folders are empty but
some have all their messages. Going back through weekly backups I have
to go to 16th September to find an intact backup. One thing that
happened between 16th September and next weekly backup on the 23rd was
the server froze up and had to be forcibly powered off (no idea why as
no logs or errors)

Now the things that are puzzling us and that Microsoft can't explain
are:

Why was everything seemingly perfect up to 20th Oct and suddenly on 23rd
Oct was 80% of the public folder contents gone. Coupled with that why
were backups from the period after 16th September supposedly completing
successfully and restoring successfully missing those same 80% of
content. Why was content available for users to access and even add to
(content placed in those folders after 16th September also vanished) for
5 weeks. Deleted item recovery shows nothing to recover so it appears
the contents have vanished rather than been deleted

I'd like to find a way to get the data back but that appears unlike as
it has seeming vanished from 5 weeks worth of backups before vanishing
off the live store.

Anyone heard of anything like this?

Thanks
David
