What I could tell the client, from my own perspective and experience:
OWA WWW services were stopping on a fairly regular basis, for no
apparent reason, when I was running Exchange 5.5. This happened more
when I had OWA on the same server as my mailboxes. It happened less
frequently, although still with disturbing regularity, when I moved OWA
onto its own server. (It was averaging about once every three days at
the point when I was integrating new Exchange 2003 mailbox servers, but
had not yet gone to a 2003 OWA front-end. It was at least daily when I
had OWA 5.5 on the same box as Exchange 5.5 mailboxes.)

When I moved to Exchange 2003, with OWA on the front-end server, the WWW
service failures ceased to become a regular event. In fact, since
converting to Exchange/OWA 2003 almost a year ago, I cannot recall
having a failure of the WWW services on my OWA front-end. (Knock on
wood!)

OWA was the main justification for my moving, not just to Exchange 2003,
but to Active Directory, period. The OWA interface in 2003 is so far
superior to the 5.5 interface that it doesn't even bear comparison. The
users love it. Of all the upgrades I've done over 25 years in this
business, none have gotten so much positive feedback as the upgrade to
the OWA 2003 interface.

There are ways to ensure continuous uptime, failover, and continuity in
any server product, but they cost a great deal of money in terms of both
hardware and personnel to support the product. It really depends how
critical the uptime is to the client, and how much they're willing to
spend to guarantee it.

Thanks,

Geni Hawkins

Nothing can be fully assured in life.......it is highly likely that it
will *not* hang up. I have never had IIS hang, or exchange for that
matter

It depends on the hardware as well as to whether it is on the HCL for
what ever OS you are going to run exch 2003 on (suggest w2003)

Not sure on your question about licensing?

Subject: Exchange 5.5 query -VERY URGENT
Importance: High

Guys,
Sorry for an out dated post on a discarded product. My Client have a
exchange 5.5 server with sp4 on Windows 2000 server. The www services
hangs up often & people cant connect to OWA. Also nothing comes up in
event logs.

I had tried explaining the client but he wants to know what assurity it
will have, that after migration to exch2k or exck2k3 this will not hang
up. Also does this have something do with Licensing as well?

I know this is too old for exchange5.5(Already discarded from MS). I am
trying to convince him to migrate to Newer version of Exchange but i
need support documents..

Any links or pointers will be helpful.

TIA
Pankaj
