It used to be that if you moved mailboxes from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 without locking people out of the mailbox store you'd likely experience duplicate mailboxes, one on the old server and one on the new, with mail going to both, and an ugly cleanup task ahead of you. Now, with the Move Mailbox Wizard in Exchange 2003 SP2, that problem is supposed to be much less likely to occur. Because I'm scared of potential problems, I still try to lock people out of the mailbox store, but you might try a few test mailboxes and deliberately leave Outlook logged on and poke at Outlook while the move occurs yourself and verify that the Exchange 2003 SP2 Move Mailbox Wizard does indeed eliminate this problem before you depend on it full speed.
In addition, it is recommended that you stop any applicable ADC connection agreements during the duration of the migration to reduce the chances of this problem occurring. If you want to lock out all users except that necessary to move mailboxes, check out this KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/218920/ If you get the duplicate mailbox problem, here's how to fix it. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299473/en-us Ed Crowley MCSE+I MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems." -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Dandy, Jim Sent: Friday, December 15, 2006 12:41 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Moving mailboxes from 5.5 to 2003 I'm going to be upgrading from Exchange 5.5 to 2003. I have two questions. 1) I had heard that you shouldn't allow people to use the 5.5 server while moving mailboxes to the E2K3 server because the move taxes the server and having people on it generates an unnecessary load. After thinking about it, I'm wondering what happens if someone is using their mailbox while you are trying to move it. It seems like it would be kind of hard to move it while it is being modified. Is this a problem? If so, is there a way I can lock people out while I do the move? 2) Along the same line, should the ADC be running during the move? It seems like the move might confuse the ADC because it could try to synchronize things that are changing. Thanks for your help.
