There are multiple extension attributes for that purpose - 15, IIRC. It just
gets hard to assign them in a low-maintenance heirarchy for that type of
solution. For departments that can overlap, we dedicate a specific extension
attribute for just that department, rather than all of them sharing
one.

Example - attribute1 can be Dept 1,2,3, or 6. attribute2 is only used to
indicate department 4, attribute3 is only used to indicate department 5. Etc.

You can create any type of LDAP filter to create an address list - just be
careful about processing overhead if they're strange filters and you create a
lot of them...

Excellent feature, great advice. If my contacts and distribution lists belong
to more than one business unit what would you recommend as an approach? Also I
seem to be overlooking how I can add DL's to an address view.

Still reading now.

Thanks

Build address book views based on a business unit specific attribute.
OUs in AD don't translate to anything Exchange related.

They are not users, only contacts, and they are not currently in AD (see
associated post below). I will soon be tasking our developer with extracting
contacts and DL's from our database, he has already done a feasibility test and
we know it's achievable. I am just unsure of how to make the OU's
easily available through Outlook. Our contacts and DL's are already categorised
with business unit association and business unit association is not mutually
exclusive.

The issue is that we have many 1000's of contacts and most of them are business
unit specific so rather than have a GAL with all DL's and contacts for the
entire organisation I would prefer to have a separate address book for each
business unit containing their associated contacts and DL's,
therefore, removing clutter and making their own contacts and DL's more
accessible.

Post to another group -

"Putting this type of information into Outlook contacts and keeping it updated
can be a pain.

It would be easier to add the contacts into a dedicated OU in Active Directory
and have the SQL data feed into that.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb123642.aspx explains some of how
this could be done.

Subject: Genius Connect

All,

MS SQL 8.00.760, Exchange 2003 SP2, Windows 2000 server SP4 - Windows 2000
Pro/Windows XP, Outlook XP/2003.

I am currently looking at making available contacts from our MS SQL database in
Outlook. I have come across Genius Connect and this seems to go some way
towards a desired solution.

http://www.geniusconnect.com/

Unfortunately we need to be able to pull distribution lists from the database
and filter the view by department. I was also hoping for the updating to be a
little more dynamic and be able to pull information from multiple DB tables to
populate the address books.

I am happy to use a public folder contacts container(s) and update these as
part of the solution.

I would be grateful for any input regarding Genius Connect, any third party
solutions that will fulfil my requirements, suggestions on how it could be
programmatically achieved.

I'm not clear -- are these users and contacts already in AD ? If they aren't,
then you're asking how to import them into AD and mail-enable them?

If they are already in AD, why try to put the lists in Public Folders when they
can be easily available in the GAL?

Subject: Contacts/distribution list AD integration

All,

Windows Server 2000 SP4, Exchange 2003 SP2, Outlook XP/2003.

I am getting a developer to extract contacts and distribution lists from an SQL
database to AD. All the contacts and distribution lists are flagged in the
database as belonging to certain business units within our organisation.
Contact and DL association with each of the business units is not
mutually exclusive.

I know it's possible to create an OU for each of our business units and then
include all the DL's and contacts associated with that unit in that OU? Is it
possible to display the contents of the OU as a public folder contacts list or
include it in an address book displayed in the "show names from:"
within Outlook?

Any other approached would be gratefully received.

I need to let the developer know how to sort, what format, and where to drop
the extract from the database in AD.

TIA

-Mark
