Looks like MS is answering those pleas -- they're endeavoring to make PFs totally and literally transparent : ) Are there any indications that MS is making an effort to effectively translate the existing PF base to another platform? The SharePoint solution leaves a lot to be desired, from what I've heard.

I'm sympathetic to your plight. PF replication has always been a black box
for which many of us have pleaded for more transparency.

I don't remember, frankly, it was quite a while ago. But I did the
migration by the book and it was successful and smooth. There were no
problems at all until I tried to LCR the PF database and couldn't because
there were some folders that were still set to replicate with the old 03
servers -- I must have missed them.
When I tried to correct that, something broke, and some folders' content
vanished. I'm trying to figure out why that breaking occurred -- I'm
reasonably sure I didn't do anything to cause those deletions. These were
operations that I had done hundreds of times before with never a hickup.
Even on the exact same pair of servers. So what was different this time?
The only thing I can think of is that maybe during the weeks that the 03
server was turned off but not removed from AD, the 07 server kept trying to
unsuccessfully replicate those few folders, and that put a strain on the
replication process.

Anyway the damage has been repaired by restoring from backup, and the PF
situation is very nearly stabilized by now. I'd just like to figure out
what happened and how to prevent it -- I'm allergic to heart attacks ;o)

It sounds a sensible approach to me; it's what I did on one of my recent
projects, i.e. leave the old server for a week before decommission.

Can you describe how you migrated the public folders to E2K7? Did you use
the Move All Replicas option, for example?

Thank you, and I've been working on that, believe me.
Do you have any thoughts on the wisdom of not killing off the old server
after everything was transferred to the new one? I thought I was being
cautious, but it seems to have been a mistake.

You first want to figure out why the clients can't use the public folders
on
the Exchange 2007 server. That's your problem and why you can't remove
the
replicas from the Exchange 2003 server. I can't tell you why you're
having
that problem, but that's where you're going to have to start.

Single Exchange 07 server on Win Server 03.

Offline (but not uninstalled) Exchange 03 on Win Server 03.

I've been running Local Continuous Replication on the mailbox databases
for
a while now, but when I try to LCR the Public Folder database, it fails
saying that it can't do that while the folders are in replication mode.

So I take off replication, but then the folders are no longer accessible
from Outlook. The DB is still there, but invisible to Outlook.

Then I have bring the old server back online and do replication with both
servers. I'm caught in a vicious circle where I can't maximize the new
server and I can't get rid of the old one.

Did I make a mistake in not removing the old Exchange 03 as soon as the
new
one was up and running? And can anyone suggest a way out of this?
