Thanks Ed. It seems things like that aren't stand-alone, they're just
agents that comprise part of the backup suite.

We're happy with Commvault, and indeed we may just get their Exchange
agent, but it'd be nice if there were something out there that's, well
cheaper basically, that can just dump to disk on a shared folder
somewhere, but using the VSS method for speed.

Don't suppose anyone's any experience of Peer or Storagecraft's
offerings?

Subject: RE: VSS Backups of Exchange 2003?

I just heard that Symantec Backup Exec has a nice VSS backup product
that
supports brick-level restore without the heartbreak of brick backup. I
can't recommend it myself because I have no experience with it, and I
don't
know if it works with Exchange 2003 or just Exchange 2007, but you're
welcome to contact them or peruse their website to find out.

Subject: VSS Backups of Exchange 2003?

I'm looking at how we backup our Exchange server as I'm about to migrate
to
a new server.

We currently use ntbackup to dump to disk, then dump that to tape.

We use Commvault who I believe make a very capable Exchange agent though
we
don't have it yet.

Do we have any other options? I ask as I believe there is a VSS backup
method that effectively gives "full speed" backups vs. the 1.2gb/min or
so
that the streaming API can product.

I've been digging around and I see the likes of Paragon have white
papers on
using their "Drive Backup" program specifically to backup Exchange 2003,
but
I'm a little unclear on whether a specific type of VSS aware program is
needed - I believe it has to send a certain request to start and end the
backup so that the database is marked as backed up and the logs are
purged?

Thanks in advance,
Paul
