So it's safe to do 2013 CU2 domain / ad prep, THEN 2010 SP3, THEN get on with 
installing 2013? I presume setup.exe would bomb out if it detected a SP2 or 
earlier Exchange version anyway.

There are schema changes in CU2.

Applying CU2 schema changes is sufficient, but don't do any other 2013 steps 
until after you have updated your 2010 servers.
