Getting in late here but my experience is having cached mode creates a better (generally) user experience if they're a heavy email user and/or you have limited bandwidth. As Damien said, the best and easiest fix is to just delete the OST and let it rebuild if there are any problems. PST's are the devil and we only employ them if we need to export something for discovery purposes.
