Hi,
Basically, I had some errors in my test lab while I was using the start / stop
DAG scripts. I cannot recall exactly what were those errors. Eventually, I
ended up upgrading the test lab using the below procedure and it seemed to be
working. But I will try to simulate again in my lab and update you in a couple
of days. I am not sure if it was a one off issue that was specific to my test
environment.
Hence I was wondering if the below method does have any issues or future impact?

Hi,

I may be missing something, but what's your reason for not wanting to to run
them?

Michael,
Thanks for the repost.
I have gone through your link earlier also. In your link also it is suggested
to run the .\StartDagServerMaintenance .\StopDagServerMaintenance.
My question is, can I upgrade to SP3 without the Start & Stop DAG scripts.
Like below:

Set-MailboxServer -Identity Node2 - DatabaseCopyAutoActivationPolicy Blocked
Upgrade SP3 on Node 1
Install RU on Node 1
Upgrade SP3 on Node 2
Install RU on Node 2
Set-MailboxServer -identity Node2 -DatabaseCopyAutoActivationPolicy Unrestricted

You need to assume that each server is going to require at least 2 hours (one
hour for SP and one hour for the current UR). And in terms of Node1 vs. Node2,
you do NOT upgrade them at the same time.

Take a read of this:

http://theessentialexchange.com/blogs/michael/archive/2011/12/07/installing-exchange-2010-service-pack-2.aspx

The process is the same. Except for the UR:

Finally, apply the service pack.
>From a cmd.exe prompt:
setup.com<http://setup.com> /m:upgrade
>From setup.exe, simply double-click the setup.exe executable and follow the
>bouncing ball.
Next, I recommend a reboot of the server. Just because I'm old school.
...... here, install the UR reboot when the UR is completed installing.
If you are using DAGs on the current server, then you need to mark the current
server as "back online - ready for use". Exchange provides a script for that:
1. Open the Exchange Management Shell (EMS)
2. cd $exscripts
3. .\StopDagServerMaintenance -ServerName ExDag01
4. exit
Note: you must substitute the proper server name for ExDag01
That's it!

Subject: [Exchange] E2K10 SP1 to SP3 2-node DAG upgrade

Hi,
I am planning to upgrade my E2K10 SP1 to SP3.
I have a 2 node DAG with all roles except EDGE & UM installed and published
over ISA 2006. EDGE role is installed on a server in DMZ which is E2K7.
Do I really need to run the StartDAGServerMaintenance.ps1? My understanding
is, StartDAGServerMaintenance.ps1 is needed to run only if I require zero
downtime. Please correct me if I am wrong.
I don't mind 2-3 hours of down time for upgrading. Moreover, it is a 2 node
DAG and since there is no CAS redundancy the DB will not be available during
the upgrade. So does it really matter to run the DAG maintenance script?
Is there any specific order or procedure that I should take care in the above 2
node scenario?
Any hidden issues or gotcha that I need to take care while upgrading?

Node1
ServerRole Mailbox, Client Access, Hub Transport
AdminDisplayVersion Version 14.1 (Build 218.15)

Node2
ServerRole Mailbox, ClientAccess, HubTransport
AdminDisplayVersion Version 14.1 (Build 218.15)

Edge
ServerRole Edge
AdminDisplayVersion Version 8.2 (Build 176.0)

Thank in advance.

Liby Philip
