I seem to recall troubleshooting something similar and found at the time (on
2k7) that ECP requires Autodiscover to be working properly.

if autodiscover fails, then how does it fail?

The system mailbox and discoverysearchmailbox store a number of configuration
settings (and don't ask me to remember them, I don't), but if you delete them
you may potentially change certain Exchange configurations.

correction ExCra does fail

And PrepareAd didnt help

any thoughts on this Option?

1- Delete system mailbox from Active Directory using ADSI tools

  * Click Start, click Run, type adsiedit.msc, and then click OK.
  * Locate the Default Naming Context node, and then locate to the CN=Users
container.
Locate:

  *   "DiscoverySearchMailbox {D919BA05-46A6-415f-80AD-7E09334BB852}"
  *   "System mailbox"
  *   Delete them
2- Run Setup.com /prepareAD, then, System mailboxes will be created
3- SP2 installation will be finish succesfully

It always scares me when people say that.

If you use exrca.com, what does it say about autodiscover?

Subject: [Exchange] DB is mandatory on usermailbox / autodiscover fail

Hi all,

I got call saying ECP show an error of DataBase is mandatory on usermailbox,
the only thing they "claimed" to have done was attempt to create a public
folder then the error "appeared"

this is Ex2013 running on 2012

I saw many of the hits were restore related which in this case it is not

I certainly am not going to go the "uninstall exchange " route at its a 200gb
store with ~100 boxes

I tried to get mailbox -arbitration as per this article
http://danblee.com/exchange-2013-error-during-install-database-is-mandatory-on-usermailbox-property-name-database/

and no luck- DB's are mounted, status is healthy, mail is flowing , so i'm
kind of stumped.
