I run MAPI/VAPI. I would switch back to MAPI only if I knew that the chance of oveloading the MAPI scanner was negligable, but to tell you the truth, I don't really have a good idea how to test for that.
We only have about 80 users, so I'm problably safe, but I guess a problem that I can work around is not really a good reason to take a chance with the virus scanner (time spent working around problem << time spent rebuilding server after virus attack). VAPI or MAPI/VAPI mode will cause archiving and synchronization errors of emails with attachments. Both are MAPI functions that expect a "cleaned" response which VAPI mode cannot deliver so the process fails. The solution for us was to run in MAPI only mode. MAPI is less efficient that VAPI or MAPI/VAPI so server performance could degrade. Additionally, if the server is under load, MAPI can deliver a virus laden attachment to a users inbox that will lie dormant until the user opens, moves or deletes the email. All of our workstations are managed by NAV with defs updated daily to provide the most protection from this. I can select that ONE message and move it to a PST file, but I can't move more than one at a time. We have 3 Exchange 5.5 servers with SP4 on them, and the problem is occurring on all servers.
