I guess if a scenario came up and the database was corrupted you would just need enough space to run the utilities against the database to fix it. So I guess your production box would work if you have double the space available to run your utilities against it. I don't know. I have never practiced this way. For restore of user mailboxes.. yes, I can use an old restore box that is a clunker. Nobody called you stupid. Having a recovery server is a great idea. Recovering to the original server is not always an option. Sure, if you blow the IS to smithereens, why not? But what about hardware failures? What if you need a mailbox from an ex employee that left 2 months ago? What about testing? Just in most environments I have worked in, they always had extra server for this. I brought the point up because our company has supplied us with a restore server. The restore server they provided is an old box that does not have enough space or enough power for us to perform a database recovery scenario. I can do a full restore of the database however, in a scenario where the database has been corrupted and you need to run utilities against the database, it usually requires double whatever your database is. We do not have the space. My co-worker stated that instead he would just try to restore/recover on the same server that has corruption.
