Another reason to have at least one spare:
  If you buy good quality equipment (insert your favorite vendor here) it
will probably run for quite a while before the first disk failure.  By that
time the x gig hot swap disk you need won't be available 'cuz the industry
is now selling 20x as the standard!   Especially if you are under financial
constraints that make you use hardware for more than 5 years....

  I wouldn't advise having an online spare, but that's open to discussion.

It doesnt matter how many you have in the set: if you lose more than one at
a time, you lose them all.
The answer: always have an extra drive.  As soon as you lose one, swap it
out.
