How long will Microsoft support the PST format? Will it be years? Who knows? What this utility will do it to extract the items from your Outlook(r) folders and store them in the common formats (Rich Text, Text, etc,) in the same hierarchy/Folder structure and with the date/time the item was received or created." Costs about $30 if I remember correctly, but well worth it. Then you can copy the whole thing to a CD and not have to worry about Read Only access.
