Hi All,

I'm hoping you can help me. This is what happens:

We're running Exch 5.5 Sp4 on NT4 Sp6.

I re-boot the server (or restart Exchange services). The server begins to
chew up memory gradually (pretty normal for Exchange). It goes beyond the
physical ram on the machine (256) but doesn't hit the virtual total (512),
usually ends up somewhere in between (much higher than normal for daily use
in our system). It goes on like this for about 90 minutes.

Then the STORE.EXE process goes to 50% CPU utilization (much higher than
normal for daily use around here). Outlook clients stop responding, much
panic ensues.

Now I can stop/start the Exchange services and the problem clears up (at
least temporarily). However it takes a long time for the IS to shut down..
watching task manager, it gradually gives up all of the memory it has used
and then restarts. It seems very slow (takes 5-6 mins to give up ~200mb of
ram).

Currently it seems to be running ok, store.exe is taking up a lot of ram,
but looking at the "mem delta" counter, its both using it and giving it back
(normal Exchange behavior). This is after 3 restarts following the scenario
above, which also happened earlier last week.

So, my questions are:

- can anyone help me find out what is going on?
- what kinds of tools or methods are people using to diagnose this stuff?

I'm at about the stage of re-applying Sp6 for NT, Sp4 for Exchange, or both,
just to see if that will help.

Thanks for any help.

-Warren
