I spoke to this Microsoft guy once who claimed that he had written MS
Mail. But he was the type that I don't take seriously [sales and
customer relations]

MS Mail was purchased to compete with CC:Mail.

I can't confirm the name of the company that was bought to get the core
MS Mail product. However, MS did very little development work on the
product before releasing it.

The original product was DOS based, and worked well for small groups. MS
built a GUI client (for Windows 3.1 (shudder) [note to self, I can
remember THAT far back???] and developed the infamous MMF file, soon to
be revamped into the PST file we see today.

The GPO or Group PostOffice that was included with NTAS was a crippled
version of MS-Mail in that you couldn't use any external processes
against the PO, with the exception of clients. Gateways, Dir-Sync
Connectors did not work against the NTAS GPO.

I though MS Mail was purchased from Network Courier in the late 80's,
but I was speaking with someone who said that in actual fact it was
first developed by Microsoft from scratch for <blech>The Mac</blech>

Can anyone confirm this for me?
