... I guess this is not the answer to the question, and not the original
question either.
What you suggest should be solved rather through /etc/mail/mailertable,
where you can specify where to send mail (to a host, through an MX lookup
for the domain itself or a different one) etc...
Changes are that the sendmail system is a gateway system, so the .forward
and aliases files won't be of much value.

But I agree that w/o the sendmail.cf and /etc/mail/ contents (or wherever
files got stored), this is a purely hypothetical discussion.
