How did you remove Contacts? Isn't that a special folder? Did you use the
Exchange client?

My words are offensive??? ::removes contacts, cleans them, puts them back
in, re-reads my email::

Um, how are they offensive?? I didn't curse; I didn't resort to
name-calling; I didn't even get too worked up. I also didn't mention
anything about viral infection.

I'm interested in knowing what was so offensive about that & if you thought
*that* was offensive, you must *really* think Don Ely's posts are
offensive!! [1]

Your words are offensive so I will try not to respond in kind.

Not all ISP's support ERTN. Not all offices have a domain or are interested
in a domain. Exchange does not require a domain and a lot of shops don't
have them. In order to get mail you make the choice:

1. Have all clients use POP mail and you take the RISK of infection as the
mail gets to the client BEFORE the mail gets into Exchange.
2. Use a POP connector on the server, scan mail before it gets to the client
and control the outbreaks.

You can preach all you want on your opinion of the connectors but there are
valid reasons to use them.

Would I do the same thing today as has been done in the last few years, no.
Would I today deploy a POP connector today with the other tools available,
only as a last resort. Do I subscribe to the catchall phrase - all POP
connectors are crap. NO.

Your opinion differs, so we agree to disagree.

There is information here: <http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm>
about why POP connectors for Exchange are crap.

You say "It has worked very well in the offices for about the last 3 years
so I'm comfortable with the product." That's like saying, "I've run with
scissors for 20 years & have never gotten hurt, so I'm comfortable running
with them now."

Why make your Exchange server behave like a client rather than a server? If
your ISP won't do ETRN, have your mail hosted by someone who will, or get a
full-time internet connection & do your mail yourself.

PS: Being a "small shop" is NOT an excuse. My company is a small shop. We
NEVER used a POP connector for Exchange - we used ETRN from our ISP before
we had a full-time internet connection. Now that we have a FT connection,
we do our own email (with 2ndary MX support from ed-com.com). Size of shop
is NEVER an excuse for doing things the wrong way.

It has worked very well in the offices for about the last 3 years so I'm
comfortable with the product. Agree that ETRN is the better solution and
have implemented as I can in the offices where the hosting partner supports
it.

On a side note, I sent an email to your contact at ed-com.com and never got
a response.

Thanks for the response.
