We've got Barracudas, LB440s, and had a lot of pain with them, all the way
through v3.5, 4.0 and 4.1 firmware.

After playing wack-a-mole with firmware upgrades for almost a year, both boxes
in an HA pair being borked by a firmware upgrade and RMA'd (fortunately not at
the same time!) we've finally got some stability on 4.2.0.015

The only positive thing I can say is that the LinkLoad tech support team (in
India, but very reasonable command of English) are generally responsive - like
you can ring them and for P1/P2 issues they'll be wanting to log into the box
within minutes. They really do try and get to the bottom of crashes (they can
get into the boxes via an SSH tunnel you initiate from the device, and with a
USB stick in the back of the unit for temporary storage they can get core dumps
off the box) and generally most of the crashes have only meant a 1-2 min
service interruption as the errant process typically realises it's fallen over
and restarts itself on the same LB device - the HA failover between the devices
is not seamless for users and we've never seen an automatic failover. If they
get a good core dump there's usually a new code release within a week or so,
they have a direct line to the software team.

We would have used our existing Foundry/Brocade GTC LBs but they were not
qualified for Exchange 2010 LB, and the forklift upgrade to go to the latest
and greatest Brocade LBs was a significant cost outlay. We didn't review the
Kemp LBs, I though if I went with a name that I had heard of from other
products, and didn't got for the cheapest I would be buying into something with
some track record and quality.

I suspect that we've done a lot of the bug fixing for their product, and if we
had the experience we had now when we bought them 18 months ago I think I would
be reasonably happy with them. I'm still suspicious about the HA though.

I've heard good things about Kemp; we're actually evaluating their product now.
