we also have ident lookups enabled in general (with some exceptions collected in the past 2 decades). Main purpose slow down bad behaving (aka spam) servers as they do not provide ident in general. However most others also drop such connections nowadays. That's why we decreased the "teergrubing" from 30s to 10s some years ago.

I used to think that ident calls are part of the SMTP RFC. But I now think I made this up from the Exim docs where "RFC" is stated but rfc1314. :-)

I also vote for keeping the feature unless it causes maintenance issues like avoiding code reorganizations or security issues.
