Ah, yes, that's the fundamental bit I was missing -- I thought you were
trying to submit to your ISP's smarthost, not a machine of your own out
on the internet.
Many ISPs block outgoing port 25 on DSL connections. Fred's advice to
enable port 587 submission on the smarthost is definitely the right way
to go.
