With 7-dollar cups of coffee and 20-dollar caesar salads, Moscow is still one
of the most expensive cities in the world. Assuming the apartment is in decent
condition, $2500/month on Mayakovskaya in the center of Moscow is more or less
in the ball park of reasonable. I would imagine that similar apartments in
Westminster in London, or on Park Avenue in Manhatten nowadays would also be in
the same price range.
When renting an apartment, the standard deal here is first and last months rent
up front, plus one month rent to the realator as commission.

I’d heard that real estate prices have recently been coming off around Moscow,
so was pretty surprised that 45m2 without furniture commands $2500 month. Even
more surprised that someone responding from this goodwill mailing list would be
expected to pay a months rent to an agent. Isn’t that a bit steep for a
solicitation on this kind of publication?
