It all depends on how the bags are checked. If, as in a later email, United can check the bags through, then yes, you can use the transfer desk. From my understanding of the original email, the bags were not going to be checked through to their final destination - requiring them to picked up at the entry into Russia because the tickets were not booked on the same itineary and S7 would require a seperate check in. Tickets, on the same flight plan, booked together, should not have this problem. But, if the tickets were booked seperately, you wouldn't be able to check your bags through, unless United can interline it. For example, when I flew to Moscow from the USA through London with BA, they were able to tag my bags through, and yes, I did not have to claim them. Europe's transfer system is great - as long as you make sure your bags are indeed checked through to their final destination (note... you must claim them in the USA regardless of transfers, but that is a different matter entirely).
