Why? pgcc and egcs are 100% compatible. pgcc is just egcs + some patches
to improve optimizations on newer processors (anything starting from a
pentium).

Could it be that you're having a problem with the switch glibc 2.0.x ->
2.1.x? glibc 2.1.x is not fully compatible with 2.0.x, and far more likely
to cause compilation problems than a changed compiler. Or did you forget
to install some of the -devel packages? (glibc-devel, kernel-headers, ...)

No. i686 is fully compatible with i586. I'm using M6 on a dual PIII-450
without problems.
