UMMM

by way of testing....

Try booting in windows then going to linux on a reboot and see
what happens with your cable modem.

There is some software supplied by Microsoft to ISPs which
ostensibly does "anti-spoofing" and actually checks your machine
with a query on port 139.  Linux of course does not respond, so
you are marked as a "spoofer" and cut off.

Now if that is NOT the problem, try these things

# modprobe 3c509
# netstat -i eth0
# netstat -a -i eth0

another thing to do is to go to
Drakconf->linuxconf->Networking->Basic Host into->Adapters and
make sure the adapter listed for the 3c509 is ticked as "enabled"

I have experienced difficulties with the 509 falling off line.  I
"fixed" it by changing hardware.  AAAnd I later tested it in a
winbox--didn't work there either.  Obviously your situation is
different.
