[expert] Lost use of 3c509

I have a dual-boot box with Mandrake 7.0 and 98Lite.  Somehow I have
lost the use of the 3C509 NIC in Linux.  98Lite still sees the card and
connects to my cable modem fine.  According to dmesg, Linux no longer
sees the card on boot up, but does load the drivers.

Most of my problems in Linux seem to be "operator error".  What did I do
wrong this time?
