Hmmm,

Actually, in the US, the maximum speed of the digital side of a 56K modem
over phone lines is restricted to 53K by the Federal Communications
Commission. Moreover, I used to work with short-range digital modems--we had
banks of 24 with either 23 working at 64K or 24 working at 56K. The rest of
the bandwidth was "borrowed" for channel management. I do not know if a
similar practice is followed for the digital return lines from an ISP, but it
seems likely since the best I have ever seen was 48K.

At this time I am unaware of any test results for "56K" modems that produced
a data rate over 48K on the return leg.

Of course, with cable, satellite dish, and adsl, higher data rates are
possible, but one thing is certain. The bandwidth you experience will be
that available from the nearest bottleneck.

For example when I downloaded the iso9660 image of Festen, I had just tested
my ADSL, and I was clear for 540K up and 690K down. The maximum speed I
could get during the DL was 28Kb/s or about 280K. The total DL took slightly
more than 6 hours.
