You need the base kernel rpm to satisfy dependancies. The kernel-smp-fb is the
frame buffer kernel, if you don't need the frame buffer you should use the
kernel-smp. The rest of the questions can be answered with this redhat how-to

I think your having trouble with the initial ramdisk. You are running a scsi
drive?
