John,

Is the 850MB (boot) a SCSI drive? If so, you may want to check
that lilo is configured properly. I had a similar problem when
I put together a SCSI system. Here is my /etc/lilo.conf file
if it is at all helpful (of course **change it to suit your system
configuration** and run /sbin/lilo to activate changes):

boot=/dev/sda
disk=/dev/sda
bios=0x80
prompt
timeout=50
image=/boot/bzImage.2210
        label=lin2210
        root=/dev/sda2
        read-only

A deja.com search turned up the answer for me. My system would
*only* boot with a floppy until I made the necessary changes.

Also WRT to your 10.5G drive formatting out to 8.5G, you may want
to make sure that your BIOS is updated. On a compaq system I was
working on, the BIOS would not recognize a system w/ (IDE) hardrives
larger than 8.5G until I updated the BIOS.

HTH,
Chris
