Thanks.... I've taken it to a local shop that understands Linux. I'm having
some other "wierdness" with my video. Mandrake installed the Frame Buffer
kernel for my S3 Virge / GX, however, Red Hat installed a standard kernel
(AFAICT, that is) and it caused the same wierdness. Matter of fact, it
didn't like my video card at all, despite the fact that Xfree86.org lists it
as completely supported by XF86_SVGA. *shrug*
There's only one O/S on there and that's Mandrake. The boot device is
/dev/hda1 (I tried putting it into the MBR of /dev/hda and it didn't work
there either, that's why I decided to try and put it on the first data
drive, which also failed!)
When I try to boot w/o the floppy, a bios boot menu comes up and asks if I
want to boot from the floppy, the hard drive, the ATAPI CD Rom (which I
don't have on this system) or network. I chose "hard drive" (some versions
of my motherboard have "optional" SCSI built-in. Mine isn't one of
those...and I have SCSI turned off in the BIOS) for the IDE. What comes up
next is a BIOS error saying "operating system not found" at which time I can
only reboot.
The LATEST reinstall has /boot and / on the IDE, and pretty much everything
else on the SCSI (Hey, the IDE is only 850 megs! <G>) There is also swap
space on both drives. I believe /dev/hda2 is swap and /dev/sda2 is also swap
(I *think*) There should only be two partitions on /dev/sda -- the data
partition and the swap partition.
Unfortunately, since the system is in the shop, I can't give the EXACT setup
of /etc/lilo.conf, but you can be sure that the boot device is /dev/hda1.
:-)
Feel free to ask anything else...
(I really have a knack for picking troublesome hardware! <G>)
John
