Wow, this is *really* slow. My own HD is also a Medalist 8,5GB and has
(with no optimizations whatsoever):

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   128 MB in  1.49 seconds =85.91 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  64 MB in 15.12 seconds = 4.23
MB/sec              

Get a replacement drive, this one's half dead.
