Yes, and that was the problem.  As Paul Wray posted, the "telnet" update only
updated the 'telnet client' and removed my 'telnet server'.  I installed the
new server program and I am once again up and running.

John Aldrich also provided me with some great troubleshooting pointers, and
your pointer to the /var/log directory answered several other questions I had.
