[expert] Large file transfers

I installed Mandrake 6 which seemed to work fine until I tried to ftp a 128Mb file from another server to the new install box where networking locked up.  Tried rcp and ftp client and had the same problems, small files transfer fine large ones lock networking.  The FTP of large files works fine with RedHat 5.1 or 5.2, I reinstalled and it still works so its not a hardware problem but I changed cards and all cables anyway.  I installed Red Hat 6.0 with various kernels (2.2.10, 2.2.11, 2.2.12) and have the same problem.  The network card is a 3com 3c905 tried compiling and using the latest driver but that didn't help either.  Does anyone have a new direction for me to try?????
