I once asked Walnut Creek how they back up their huge disk storage. They told me they don't back it up!! If it breaks they reconstruct from their mirrors. I was astounded at first, but as I thought more about it, I decided to do the same myself. I have mirrors of most everything, and real tape backups for only configuration data like /etc.
