The 'electric interference' description reminds me of KMpg, which for some
reason was the default wav player on my system until I changed it. This may be
what is playing your sounds. Try playing the files directly from KMpg, and if
you get the same caterwauling, then that's the problem. From kfm, go to
Edit->Mime Types->audio and select the properties for x-wav. Make sure that the
default player is not kmpg. Also go into Edit->applications->multimedia and
make sure that x-wav is not listed under the application tab.
