wrt: error window in X

The first virtual console will display some error messages. I know this
isn't what you want, but you could hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 from time to time.

Maybe open an xterm and redirect tty1's stdout and stderr to stdout on the
xterm.

(don't ask me how, it's been a while since I've done that)
