I use sendmail for the task here. 15 PCs using either linux or windows
fetch their mail from the pop server on the internet interface machine It
is fast and only took a bit of work using linuxconf plus one small hack on
the sendmail.cf file.
Sendmail is more of a security risk than postfix. All my local users live
in /etc/hosts.allow and I set up /etc/mail/access to deny relay except
from those IPs which are all reserved for local network use. I also took
the opportunity to stop mail from a few spammers and from some folks we no
longer do business with, like egghead and microsoft. With a proper
lock-down, sendmail is acceptable. On the other hand, if you have never
configured any of these.....
Well, sendamil configuration will make you a system administrator. It is
definitely one of the blacker arts and a worthy education. And without
linuxconf to help, I think I would have been reluctant to be crazy enough
to configure sendmail twice.
