Software modems do not perform as well as hardware modems for any given speed.

That said, it appears that your beta software is a bit too beta as yet.

PCTel does supply modems of a software nature to OEMs with linux drivers....

Actiontec makes a PCI Hardware modem.

And there is no rule that says your ISA modem can't still be in the box for
linux until you are able to get a version that works.
