Actually, everything worked pretty well out of the box. I installed 6.1, it
detected the network card, and allowed me to configure it properly during the
setup phase.
The only problem I really had was actually getting the IP addresses for some of
the network resources I need to connect to. I still can't connect to most of
the pc's on the network, but since there is usually very little need to do
this, I haven't really bothered trying to track down the problem yet. I've also
noticed that, even after correcting the local nameserver address, I still have
to use IP addresses for certain boxes that the Win95 clients can see.
The connection to the MS Exchange server was easier than I had feared.
Fortunately, the admin had set it up as a POP3 server, so it was very straight
forward. I have to use the firewall as my SMTP server, or my internet mail
doesn't work, but that's probably more of a setup issue with the server.
So, a basic out of the box configuration worked great. My compliments to the
Mandrake team. I don't know if any other machines here at my company (other
than the firewall) will ever be converted to Linux, since everyone else is happy
dealing with the daily spool32 crashes, but at least I've proven it can be done.
I don't know how much use this will be to anyone else, but that's the rundown
on what it took to get my linux box up and running. Thanks again to everyone
that gave me tips on possible pitfalls beforehand.
