I had a similar computer with RedHat-5.2, and had mouse problems too.

Try to make your mouse work in console mode in the first place.
It was helpful for me to 'man gpm' ( you alredy have gpm running ).
As I remember I just tried all types gpm supports until it worked.

But if you have a rectangular connector and it is not thick enough,
chances are this is a serial mouse :-) I saw serial mouses with both narrow
(9 pin?) and wide (25 pin?) connectors.

How many buttons? Is there switch "2buttons/3buttons" ?
