IDE disks have can be put into sleep mode (HD spin down). The command is
/sbin/hdparm
Two options can be used to do this, -S sets a the timeout when the drive is
put in sleep mode or the -y puts the drive immediatelly in sleep mode.
In my /etc/rc.d/rc.local I have the following line
/sbin/hdparm -S 240 /dev/hda
the 240 are 20 mins (in 5 second increments).
I also run KDE and have the DPMS enabled and set to 20 mins. This turns the
monitor off to save energy. I think that the monitor is the must energy
hungry device in a computer system, or at least it's not needed when your'e
away.
