Hello John,
The problem with cable modems is that they're acting as a bridge in most
cases. A bridge does not route, it passes packets from one interface to
the other. In some setups, you can place a packet sniffer on any node and
see the traffic of all nodes in the neighborhood. So a firewall would be
quite useless. Check with your cable provider how they are setup.
