Fire up kppp and click the setup option then select modem tab followed
by the modem query. As long as the Xircom modem is not a winmodem (don't
think it is) then you should get a successful test. You may have to
configure the serial port id (/dev/ttyS1 probably since your internal
serial port is ttyS0). If the modem is busy then exit kppp and use
setserial:

/sbin/setserial /dev/ttyS1 auto_irq skip_test autoconfig

if the modem is still busy when you try again then you have to convince
it with a little prodding:

/sbin/serserial /dev/ttyS1 irq 6   <- some unused irq which one not
important
/sbin/setserial /dev/ttyS1 irq 3   <-- ttyS0 wants to use irq 4 and S2
wants irq 3

this is what I had to do to get my 3Com pcmcia modem to work in my dell
i7k.
