As nobody seems to know a solution to this problem I searched a
little bit further and have some more info.

I checked the target partition of the faulty installation and
found

The error seems to occur where install_any.pm is looking for a
file /mnt/root/auto_inst.cfg.pl.pl as there is only an
auto_inst.cfg.pl in that directory.

This makes me wonder how on earth this baby installed at the
first time.
